Today is my sweet girl’s birthday! Last year I promised to write a letter each year on her birthday and since she is still so little, I’m sharing them here on the blog as well.

Dear Joy,

I was so worried about you growing up; I LOVED the baby phase. I was convinced it couldn’t get much better but it has been more than I could have ever hoped for. You started running, jumping, playing, and were soon unstoppable. One my favorite things to do is watch you solve a problem or accomplish a new task. I squeal with excitement and call your dad eager to tell him, “What Joy just did!”.

My favorite moment was when you went down the slide by yourself for the first time,

or maybe when you slept in your toddler bed the entire night,

or when you went in the potty like a big girl (might be the best!)

Each and every accomplishment put the biggest grin on your face and would elicit the most genuine and deep laugh.

Now you dance and sing to your favorite songs. You twirl till you get dizzy and attempt to help me in the kitchen.

You wake up too early and call for “Mama” or “Dada” but that makes it all worth it. We are greeted with a big hug and kiss and all you want is for us to sit and watch Mickey Mouse with you.

You started talking and communicating this year. You said I love you, I need you and then came NO!

Overnight you developed a stubborn streak and a will like no other. There were tantrums and standoffs with tears and apologetic hugs. It took me awhile to see, but you are more like me than i’m sure you will admit in the future. So independent and determined in everything. I pray daily, that you remain strong and steadfast but just as quickly learn when to let it go.

This year you also became a big sister. The best sister to your brother Jeff. From the day we brought him home, you have been a helper, the number one cheerleader during tummy time, and the most loyal protector.

When I take you to childcare at the gym, they always tell me you drag all the toys over by where he’s laying and proceed to play while keeping an eye on your brother. I know those protective roles will soon reverse but he’s lucky to have you.

You have taught me the most unlikely lessons. Lessons in humility, confidence, and patience. You are such a gift and I hope you know that I love you more than anything. I cant wait to see what next year has in store my my girl!

I prayed for you to bring Joy to those around you and God is faithful. Happy Birthday baby girl.
